Therapy is a first line treatment for anxiety. Although medication can alleviate symptoms of anxiety, it may not improve the behavioral complications associated with anxiety. Behaviors such as avoidance require changes in the way a person thinks about feared situations and the way they respond. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy provides the tools to overcome avoidance and improve function.
Hopelessness is a common symptom of depression. Depression changes the way a person thinks about self, others, and the future. Unfortunately, it can be hard to see solutions and options when one is depressed. But hopelessness is not an accurate assessment about the future, but a distorted view due to depression. Getting help for the underlying illness is important.
Teenagers frequently struggle with depression and anxiety. They face new challenges as they navigate from childhood into adulthood. Not every teen experiences a smooth transition. They often need help when frustration ensues or when they become overwhelmed. Teens are often more impulsive than adults and may jump to unhealthy behaviors at times of challenge. Depression can look different in a teen than in an adult. Teens may be irritable and moody. Adolescence is a time of experimentation and vulnerability to peer influences which can lead to drug, alcohol use and engagement in dangerous behaviors. Peer relationships can pose many challenges at this time of life. Bullying and teasing, rejection and expulsion from the group can result in significant sadness and hopelessness. Isolation from their peers may be a sign of problems. Teens can develop unhealthy eating patterns when they become concerned with their weight or body image.

Exercise is one of the best tools for managing stress. Even moderate activity can help. Practicing mindfulness can be very useful. Exercises are widely available. Yoga or other calming activities can be a great choice. Talking with a trusted friend, journaling, speaking with a spiritual advisor can all be useful options. Eat better and avoid alcohol or drugs which can worsen symptoms.
